Is There Anything Dembele Is Better Than Mbappe At? Analysed

Following Ousmane Dembele's impressive outing against Real Sociedad, some pundits started comparing him to Kylian Mbappe.

Does this comparison make any sense this season? Let's see.

Mbappe is still out of reach for Dembele in terms of scoring goals

Ousmane has surely improved in this respect (remember the times when his finishing was terribly poor?), yet it is difficult to imagine him reaching Mbappe's figures one day. Not just because Dembele is a worse shooter and scorer – he's more of an inside forward, cutting into central positions from the wing, while Kylian often plays as an advanced striker.

Mbappe's primary duty is to score goals – and he's doing it very well*.


Mbappe is a slightly better passer and dribbler

Still a way to go for Dembouz here – but he isn't too far away from his compatriot in these stats. If Ousmane continues to improve the way he does these days, his technique will be world-class too.


Dembele is generally a better playmaker than Mbappe

Under Xavi, Ousmane is often about creating chances from deep and trying to find the right man to give the last pass to.

We can't say the difference in this stat is huge between the two - Mbappe is quite a complete striker who is also active at playmaking - still, Dembouz has an edge here – especially in actions leading to shots. If Barca's conversion rate was better, Dembele would even have a bigger advantage over Kylian here.


Is there anything else Dembele is better than Mbappe at?

Sure. It's his defensive contribution which is way more impressive than Kylian's. That's understandable though – Ousmane often has to track back down his wing while Mbappe often acts as the main man upfront.
