Clarin claims that Messi held the miniature for several minutes, without discovering it was not the one handed to him by FIFA president Gianni Infantino.
In fact, it took the intervention of his teammate Angel Di Maria for the veteran to realise he was celebrating with a fake trophy.
Incredibly, the photo shared by Messi of him holding the fake World Cup trophy went on to make history as the most-liked post on Instgram.
The post has since racked up more than 70 million likes on the social media platform, beating a previous record held by Cristiano Ronaldo and an egg.
Ronaldo's post of an image of him playing chess with Messi was initially the top post, after it clocked more than 40 million likes.
