Ex-Man United Striker Cavani Wants World Cup Referee Sent to Jail After VAR ‘Mistakes’

Edinson Cavani furiously struck the VAR monitor as he left the field in Uruguay's final World Cup group game against Ghana.

The former Manchester United striker unleashed his anger on the technology following Uruguay's group stage exit in Qatar last month.

With a disciplinary decision set to be made about Cavani's outrage, the Valencia frontman reckons if he is sanctioned, Daniel Siebert, who took charge of the game, should be put behind bars.

"If they sanction me for hitting the VAR [monitor], the referee, for having knocked us out of the World Cup, they have to put him in jail," he said in an interview with El Larguero as quoted by MARCA.

Cavani explained: "Because they are mistakes that, with the VAR, all the cameras and all the referees who are behind, they cannot make,"

Wary of the severity of the sanctions, the 35-year-old expressed remorse over his actions.

"I'm worried [about a possible sanction]. Yes, of course, it worries me, because it would mean being out of competitions with my teammates, my club and my national team. It worries me. But these are things that happen," he said.

Cavani punches VAR screen

Former Manchester United striker Edinson Cavani unleashed his anger the moment the final whistle was blown, following Uruguay's early World Cup exit.

The 35-year-old was introduced in the game in the 65th minute to replace his long-time strike partner Luis Suarez during their last Group H game against Ghana on Friday.

However, the Valencia forward was full of frustration and aimed his fury at the VAR screen after his side was eliminated from the Mundial.
