Cristiano Ronaldo Facing more Al-Nassr Frustration As New Club 'Unable To Register' Him
Cristiano Ronaldo was already set for a frustrating wait for his Al-Nassr debut, but the veteran forward could now face a further blow with reports suggesting his new club have been unable to register him.
Ronaldo was unveiled by the Saudi Pro League outfit on Tuesday, less than two months after leaving former club Manchester United. He hinted that he would be ready to start two days later in a league game against Al-Ta'ee, but this proved wishful thinking.
The forward was handed a two-game ban by the Football Association in November after slapping a phone out of the hand of a young fan as United faced Everton in the Premier League. It has been reported that this suspension will still apply to the Saudi competition, meaning the wait goes on, but fresh reports appear to rub salt into the wound.
According to Barron's, the issue surrounds Al-Nassr's overseas player quota. The Saudi Pro League allows clubs to register eight foreign players at any given time, with seven of those eight allowed to be named in matchday squads.
The eight on Al-Nassr's books before Ronaldo included Cameroon striker Vincent Aboubakar and former Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina. According to reports from Saudi Arabia, the most likely player to make way is Jaloliddin Masharapov, the Uzbek winger who has played just once this season and previously wore Ronaldo's number seven.
Reports from Europe suggest Al-Nassr were banned from new registrations due to outstanding debts. However, with these debts having supposedly now been paid, there could still be time to register Ronaldo before the next game for which he is eligible.
