Bale Announces Sudden Retirement From International and Club Football

After 17 years as a professional footballer, Gareth Bale has made the decision to retire from the sport.

The former Real Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur star spent last season with Los Angeles FC in Major League Soccer and most recently represented Wales at the FIFA World Cup.

Considered one of Britain’s greatest football exports, Bale won five Champions League titles as well as three La Liga titles. He also helped LAFC achieve their first-ever MLS Cup trophy.

The Welsh attacker, however, has decided to call an end to his playing career, describing it as the best decision he’s ever made, Sky Sports reported.

"I feel incredibly fortunate to have realised my dream of playing the sport I love. It has truly given me some of the best moments of my life. The highest of highs over 17 seasons, that will be impossible to replicate, no matter what the next chapter has in store for me,” he said.

As noted by Transfermarkt, Bale represented Wales 116 times and scored 40 goals for the national team.

He also enjoyed a legendary career at club level, playing for Southampton, Spurs, Madrid and finally LAFC.
