Official: Sergio Busquets announces his retirement from international football at 34

After 143 caps, two goals, nine assists, one World Cup and one European Championship, Sergio Busquets has announced his retirement from international football.

"I would like to announce that after almost 15 years, the time has come to say goodbye to the national team.

I would like to thank all the people who have accompanied me on this long road. From Vicente del Bosque who gave me the opportunity to start, to Luis Enrique for making me enjoy every second of it. I would also like to thank Julen Lopetegui, Fernando Hierro and Robert Moreno for their trust, as well as all their staffs.

And of course to each and every one of my teammates, with whom I have fought to try to get the national team where it deserved to be, with more or less success but always giving my all and with the greatest pride.

I don't want to forget any member of the team, who have been just as important in the background (physios, doctors, players, delegates, nutritionists, staff, press, security, travel, etc...) and all the people and workers who have crossed my path and have made it so special.

Also to the presidents, managers, sports directors, and those who, in one way or another, have been part of the federation.

To all the fans, for the daily support received and especially when things didn't go as expected. That is when you are most needed and when we have to be more united. To all of you, thank you!

And of course, the most important thing, my family. For supporting me in every moment and in all my decisions and for sharing this journey, being far away many days and always making me feel close so that I could give the best of myself.

It has been an honour to represent my country and take it to the top, to be World and European champion, to be captain and to play so many matches, with more or less success but always giving my all and doing my bit to make everything as good as possible and to make everyone feel how important they are, helping everyone and fighting for the same goal, with unique, unforgettable and historic experiences" - Busi's farewell letter reads.

The Barca veteran, 34, is expected to decide on his club future in the coming months as well.
