La Liga releases statement against new Club World Cup format, could take legal action
In the wake of the new Club World Cup format announced by FIFA, La Liga has released an official statement opposing the initiative.
La Liga claims that the decision to change the format was taken unilaterally, without consulting or agreeing with the national leagues. They believe that the decision does not take into regard the football calendar and smaller clubs and could damage the entire football ecosystem.
Thus, La Liga announced its intention to seek legal action to prevent the new format of the Club World Cup.
As a reminder, FIFA president Gianni Infantino announced on Friday that, starting in 2025, the Club World Cup will involve 32 clubs and will be played every other four years. However, no additional information was given as to the qualification methods, location of the tournament or exact dates.
