FIFA president announces new Club World Cup format with 32 teams to begin in 2025

FIFA president Giani Infantino has announced that starting in 2025, the Club World Cup format will change.

"The new men's Club World Cup will take place in 2025 and will feature 32 teams. 32-team tournament will go ahead, making it like a World Cup," Infantino said, as quoted by Fabrizio Romano.

At the moment, FIFA did not present additional information about the new competition.

Daily Mail previously reported that FIFA want to host a Club World Cup every four years because the current format attracts little interest outside of South America.

However, there are no clear plans regarding the qualification mechanism at the moment, and discussions regarding broadcasting rights and commercial partners have not started either.

As per the same report, most European clubs are opposed to the proposed format and let FIFA know about it. It appears that the organization decided to go ahead with their plans regardless.

The current Club World Cup format involves the continental champion from each federation and is held every year. Chelsea won their first FIFA Club Word Cup trophy in 2021.
