Van Dijk says he will defy FIFA rules and wear LGBT-supporting armband at World Cup
"I will wear the OneLove armband," Virgil van Dijk said, as quoted by the Liverpool Echo.
"Nothing changed from our point of view. If I will get a yellow card for wearing it then we would have to discuss it because I don't like to play while being on a yellow."
FIFA have a list of messages players are allowed to transmit while on the pitch at the World Cup and 'OneLove' is not one of them. Van Dijk could be booked before the game if he wears the armband.
The rainbow captain's armband with 'OneLove' written on it is designed to promote LGBTQ+ rights and inclusivity. Qatar criminalises homosexuality.
