'I’m dead serious': Van Dijk claims Carragher wouldn't have been able to get into current Liverpool squad
Speaking to Gary Neville on The Overlap, Virgil van Dijk was asked if Jamie Carragher, the player who made the second-most appearances in Liverpool's history, would've made it in the current team.
"Like the squad or the XI? Not even the full squad. Not in the first 20, he’d be in the stands. Yeah (I mean that)," Van Dijk answered to Neville's amusement.
"You have two centre-backs playing. Hopefully I’m playing, and Joe Gomez now. You have Matip and Konate. You’re not going to put a third centre-back on the bench.
"No (he wouldn’t get in ahead of them) and I’m dead serious as well. Do you think he was better than Konate and Matip? He played many, many games for Liverpool but I think in the modern day game, Matip and Konate would be ahead of him."
We have to somewhat disagree with Virgil here. As someone who could be a decent full-back, Carragher would be appreciated in the modern game for his versatility and at least earn a place on the bench.
Still, it's probably true that he would not have been the first-choice centre-back in the current Liverpool squad - although he would've come in handy in case of an injury crisis.
