‘He made the decision personally’: Laporta rubbishes claims Pique retired for being mistreated by Barca

Addressing certain rumours that Gerard Pique was forced to retire early due to mistreatment from Barcelona’s executives, Joan Laporta told EFE: “The retirement was for sporting reasons since Xavi was very clear and very honest with him at the beginning of the season and told him that he had the intention of renewing the team.

“Gerard, realizing that he is a winner and wanted to participate more, made the decision personally, as it should be, and we respect it.

“He has been one of the great centre-backs in the history of Barça. He is an extraordinary person who has also achieved so much success in his career and is a person who is also endearing because he feels strongly about the club and is part of our history and our shield.

“I have always been grateful because he is a man who will always try to help Barça work better.”

Pique’s relationship with Laporta has reportedly broken down since his retirement and he isn’t on the best of terms with the Barca president anymore.

The Spaniard is hoping to run for the next presidential elections and become the club’s president in the near future.
