Carabao Cup fixtures 2022/2023: Draw, results, dates

Liverpool beat Chelsea in the final of the 2021/22 Carabao Cup after a memorable penalty shootout decided the clash between the two Premier League heavyweights. There will be no chance of a repeat this season: Graham Potter's side were eliminated by Manchester City in round three.

The EFL Cup (Carabao Cup for sponsorship reasons) began with 92 participating clubs from the top four tiers of English football: Premier League (20 clubs), Championship (24 clubs), League One (24), and League Two (24).

The 13 Premier League clubs not involved in European cup competitions joined in the 2nd Round, and the remaining seven sides in the 3rd Round.

  • 1st Round: Aug. 9-11
  • 2nd Round: Aug. 23-25
  • 3rd Round (Rd of 32): Nov. 8-10
  • 4th Round (Rd of 16): Dec. 20-22
  • Quarter-finals: Jan. 10-12
  • Semi-finals: Jan. 24-26 (Leg 1), Jan. 31-Feb. 2 (Leg 2)
  • Final: Sun, Feb. 26
Every round is single-elimination except for the semi-finals, which are played over two legs (no away goals tiebreaker). There is no extra time up to and including the quarter-finals, with matches level after 90 minutes going straight to penalties.

However, extra time will be in effect for the semi-final second legs and the final, if necessary.

The final is traditionally held at Wembley Stadium in London.

Carabao Cup 3rd Round

Round three is where the remaining Premier League sides entered the competition. As it happened, plenty of them will not play another match in the tournament this season.

While Manchester City enjoyed a good result against Chelsea, and Liverpool scraped through on penalties, there were others who fell at this stage — including Arsenal, the Premier League leaders at the time of the matches.

The final match of the round is between Manchester United and Aston Villa on November 10, after which the fourth-round draw will take place.

The Carabao Cup 3rd Round draw was held on August 25.

Carabao Cup 2nd Round

The 2nd Round features the 35 winners from the 1st Round joined by the 13 Premier League clubs not involved in European competition, and the two relegated clubs from the Premier League who finished in 18th (Burnley) and 19th place (Watford) last season.

The Premier League sides have given a good account of themselves thus far with only Fulham falling to lower-division Crawley. Leicester City and Bournemouth needed penalties to advance from their matchups.
