What must happen for Liverpool to beat Napoli to 1st place in Champions League group
Liverpool face Ajax away today and a draw will be enough for the Reds to qualify for the Champions League Round of 16.
As it stands though, Liverpool will qualify by finishing second which means they’ll face one of the group winners next. That’s because topping the group would be difficult for the Reds as not everything depends on them.
Napoli are currently first in the group, three points ahead of Liverpool and with a goal difference of +13:
Although the Italian team’s goal difference is much superior to Liverpool’s, it’s not a big deal. The ultimate decider for teams level on points in the Champions League is their head-to-head record.
This means that Liverpool would have to beat Napoli by more than 4-1, the scoreline from the first clash.
Beating Napoli 5-2 or 6-3 won’t do because then away goals in the head-to-head games come into play.
An easier scenario for Jurgen Klopp’s men would be this: Napoli drop points tonight while Liverpool win at Ajax. Then the distance between the two teams is one point and Liverpool just have to beat Napoli at home to top the group.
In case Napoli win or draw against Rangers while Liverpool lose to Ajax today, any hope of topping the group would be gone for Jurgen Klopp's side.
