It’s a been a mixed bag for Valencia under Rino Gattuso, with four wins, three draws and four defeats from their 11 league games so far.

Los Che had been on a five-match undefeated sequence heading into last weekend’s home fixture against Real Mallorca but slumped to a disappointing 2-1 defeat having taken the lead through Edinson Cavani’s four goal in three matches.

Barcelona seem to be a club in crisis, what with failing to qualify for the knockout stages of the Champions League and the financial implications of that failure. However, it’s easy to forget that Xavi Hernández’s side were top of LaLiga until a couple of weeks ago, before losing El Clásico to Real Madrid.

Barça have won nine and drawn one of their other 10 league fixtures, and another victory at Mestalla will draw them level on points with Los Blancos, who play host to Girona on Sunday.

USMNT man Yunus Musah isn’t available for Valencia having picked up his fifth booking of the season against Mallorca last weekend. Ilaix Moriba and Samu Castillejo are other midfield absentees due to injury, while goalkeeper Jaume Domenech, who won’t play again until next year, has been joined in the treatment room by Mouctar Diakhaby, who isn’t expected to feature until after the World Cup because of a hamstring problem.

Barcelona’s defensive injury issues did appear to have eased in the last couple of weeks but Xavi again has a problem to deal with at right-back with Sergi Roberto having dislocated his shoulder.

Defenders Andreas Christensen and Ronald Araújo remain sidelined, along with attacker Memphis Depay. Teenage midfielder Gavi is back at full fitness after a recent knock and may return to the starting line-up.

February 2022: Valencia 1-4 Barcelona

October 2021: Barcelona 3-1 Valencia

May 2021: Valencia 2-3 Barcelona

December 2020: Barcelona 2-2 Valencia

January 2020: Valencia 2-0 Barcelona

There have been plenty of goals in recent meetings between the teams, with both finding the net in nine of the last 10 clashes. Barcelona have lost on just one of their last 18 visits to Mestalla.

Prediction – Valencia 1-2 Barcelona

The referee for the game will be Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea.
