Ten Hag challenges Van de Beek to a fight for a place at Manchester United.
When asked about Donny van de Beek's lack of game time, Erik ten Hag told reporters: "He has to be fit. Obviously, that is a disadvantage.
"He is now here for two-and-a-half years. He had pre-season, that was quite okay, then his chances will come.
"When he came on against Brighton, he came on as a sub and did very well, but you have to be available. When you are not available, you cannot get a place in the first XI.
"Now he has to make sure he gets fit and fights for his position."
The Dutch midfielder has been a peripheral figure at Manchester United since joining in the summer of 2020. Even under Ten Hag, who worked with him at Ajax, Donny can't seem to nail a starting spot.
The 25-year-old was loaned to Everton at the beginning of this year. He endured an injury-plagued spell there, returning to Old Trafford in the end.
