James Rodriguez reveals unexpected reason why Florentino Perez blocked his transfer to Atletico
Back in 2019, James Rodriguez was in advanced negotiations to join Atletico Madrid from Real Madrid. The move collapsed eventually, and we have finally learned the reason.
"Almost everything was completed but after losing 7-3 to Atletico in pre-season, the president told me that I can't leave," James told El Chiringuito TV.
The Colombian also explained why he was open to joining Atletico despite them being our fierce rivals: "I wanted to be close to my family in Spain."
It appears that the Merengues didn't want to let Rodriguez more to Atletico after an embarrassing defeat in pre-season to avoid ridicule. The attacker stayed at Real Madrid for the season only to play 14 games and contribute with one goal.
The next summer, he left for Everton.
