Boehly exploring purchasing Brazilian clubs as he aims to follow Red Bull and Man City model
As per multiple reports, Chelsea owner Todd Boehly's vision for the future is to purchase smaller clubs across the world and follow the Red Bull and Man City model.
The model of these two clubs is straightforward - the owners have purchased clubs in different countries (and even continents) and use them as 'feeder' clubs for the main team.
City and Red Bull therefore benefit from the academy and coaching of the smaller clubs, where the best players and coaches can get promoted and bought out for a smaller fee to join them.
"The Blues are known to have sounded out options in Portugal, Belgium and Brazil to emulate their rival’s success in both fostering and stockpiling young talent," a report from the Evening Standard reads.
This approach will also signal the end of Chelsea's 'loan army' era, where as many as 20 or more players were often out on loan every season. Boehly wants to balance the books to avoid Financial Fair Play (FFP) sanctions.
Boehly is currently keeping an eye on lower-league Brazilian clubs to start off his purchasing spree. Santos were contacted for the idea but rejected the proposal, the report adds.
