Xavi Sends Strong Message To Alba As He Explains Decision To Start Balde

Against Real Valladolid, Xavi once again used 18-year-old Alex Balde ahead of club veteran Jordi Alba. Here's what he had to say about it after the game.

"Balde is playing because he is playing very well. He had a great pre-season and deserves to play. If we are talking about meritocracy, this is his moment.

"I am very happy for him, he is showing a lot of personality. He is very good going forward. A spectacular boy."

Here's what the coach had to say on Alba: "I can’t call Alba a substitute now but Balde is doing very well. I'm sure Alba and Pique will get minutes. We play a lot and there may be injuries as well. Competition is healthy and brings the best out of the players."

Alba has started the previous two games for Barca on the bench. Pique, who Xavi also mentioned, is yet to play a single minute this season. The gaffer seems serious about giving minutes to those players that deserve it the most.
