Thomas Partey will remain sidelined with an ankle injury for an unspecified amount of time, Mikel Arteta officially confirmed on Tuesday.
Speaking to the reporters ahead of the Aston Villa clash, the Arsenal manager said: "We still have to make another scan on Thomas, to see the length.
"Let's see [if the injury is long-term]. I cannot tell you yet. [The injury is in the] similar area [as last season], but hopefully it's not as bad."
Partey missed the final ten games of the 2021/22 Premier League campaign for the Gunners after picking up an ankle injury.
Arsenal are alarmed by the 29-year-old's fitness record and want to sign a midfielder before the September 1 transfer deadline.
