Barcelona star Ousmane Dembele's will earn up to £17m a year after signing new deal at the Nou Camp
Barcelona forward Ousmane Dembele is set to earn up to £17m a year after signing a new contract at the Catalan club, according to reports.
The French international penned a new two-year-deal earlier this summer after much speculation surrounding his future with the former Borussia Dortmund star out of contract at the end of last season.
He has had an offer of an extension from the Catalan giants since the winter but was exploring his options across Europe and beyond before committing his future to the club.
According to Sport, the details of Dembele’s new mega deal have been revealed.
He will earn a minimum of £13.5m gross for each year of his contract, with a further £3.4m available in bonuses in both seasons.
This means he could earn almost £34m across his contract after extending his stay at the Nou Camp.
The former Borussia Dortmund star will also receive 50% of transfer fee if he departs over the next two seasons, with his release clause set at £42m.
Dembele joined Barcelona in a staggering £120million deal in 2017 but has struggled to make an impact, facing significant injury problems, although he did improve after Xavi took over as manager.
The forward contributed 13 assists and one goal in just 15 LaLiga starts after the club legend arrived in the dugout and was linked with Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United this summer.
Dembele has also excelled in pre-season for Barcelona and Xavi heaped praise on him for his performances.
Speaking after the Frenchman netted two in a friendly against Juventus, he said: ‘He has shown what he is capable of. He is different, special. There are not many of this type. He gives us a lot with the way we play.
'Not everyone has the ability to make a difference in the world of soccer and he does. He is involved and he shows it. I don't know the Dembele from before November, I don't know him. I am very happy with this one.'
With the well-publicised financial problems at Barcelona this summer, Xavi’s side are currently unable to register their five new signings - Robert Lewandowski, Raphinha, Jules Kounde, Frank Kessie and Andreas Christensen, with LaLiga insisting the club must raise around £85m before Saturday’s league opener against Rayo Vallecano to register these additions.
But such is the dire situation at the Nou Camp that Dembele along with Sergi Roberto, who also signed a new deal this summer, are also unable to yet be registered despite playing for Xavi’s side last season.
