Wayne Rooney 'optimistic' about signing Phil Jones for DC United
Wayne Rooney is eager to hand Phil Jones a lifeline by signing him for MLS outfit DC United. This is according to the Daily Star, a tier-three source.
The Manchester United legend is 'optimistic' about reuniting with his former teammate for the Washington-based club.
However, Jones is currently earning £120,000-a-week at Old Trafford, which is way above DC's pay range.
The English centre-back would either need to undergo a pay cut or work out a loan deal where the Red Devils continue to pay part of his wages.
Jones has reportedly informed United chiefs that he's happy to fulfill his contract and stay till the summer of 2023. He prefers to stay instead of moving to a different club for lower wages.
The 30-year-old has not travelled with Erik ten Hag and co for pre-season, meaning he won't be missed if sold.
