Speaking to the Telegraph, Erik ten Hag said: "I am well informed, Cristiano Ronaldo also has an option [for another year]. Yes [he could stay beyond next season]. I have signed here for three years but in football it's short-term as well.
"I have a strategy, it's a process, it takes time but in the end we have to make sure from the outset there is a winning team. The players dictate the way you play. You construct your team around them.
"Cristiano is capable of doing that [pressing]. I have my set demand. We want to play in a certain way. A top player can contribute and Ronaldo is an absolute top player in our squad. He's not in the squad but he is training.
"I think we all know Ronaldo is a top professional and he will be fit. That is the last concern I have. It’s the same status as last week in Bangkok [about when Ronaldo will return], no change. I cannot tell you. Not yet."
Ronaldo has failed to report back to pre-season training and join the rest of the Manchester United squad earlier this month, citing a 'family issue'.
The 37-year-old is looking to leave the club this summer and play in the Champions League. However, the Portuguese could still stay at Old Trafford.
