Revealed: Liverpool beat Real Madrid to Nunez signing due to passport issue
Liverpool faced some late competition from Real Madrid in their quest to sign Darwin Nunez, claims Fabrizio Romano.
He said on his Youtube channel: "I want to reveal to you that Real Madrid were really interested after missing out on the Kylian Mbappe deal.
“One of the strikers wanted by Real Madrid was Darwin Nunez, but it was not possible from a passport point of view, because Darwin has no European passport.
“And with Real Madrid it would not be possible to register Darwin Nunez if they found an agreement with Benfica, so it was impossible to complete that negotiation.”
La Liga rules state that only a few players without European passports can play for one of their teams, which is why Real Madrid backed out of the race for Nunez as they already have a set number of players without the European passport.
The Reds were swift and efficient in completing the Nunez signing, beating clubs like Real Madrid and Man United, as Jurgen Klopp was able to fulfil his objective of strengthening the front-line.
