'I think he is a first-choice starter': Ten Hag confirms Harry Maguire's 2022/23 role

Speaking to the Telegraph, Erik ten Hag said: "I will support Harry Maguire everywhere I can. In the end, he has to do it by himself and he has the qualities to do it. He has showed it so often in the past.

"I always see the captaincy as an issue that I dictate. The team building for me is an important point and I always talk about a group of leaders. The captain is a really important one and I'm happy with him.

"I think he is a first-choice starter. He's proved it in the past but he has also to prove it in the present time and in the future. He has played 60 times for England [46 in fact]. Harry is really impressive and I expect a lot from him."

Maguire's future was questioned at the end of last campaign with some reports suggesting the centre-back could lost the armband — and even leave Manchester United.

However, Ten Hag confirmed earlier this month that the 29-year-old will remain as skipper for the 2022/23 season. The Dutchman clearly sees Maguire as an important part of his Old Trafford project.
