African Cup of Nations shifted from July 2023 to January 2024 - here's how it affects Liverpool

The Confederation of African Football has officially announced that the African Cup of Nations' next edition will be shifted.

The competition was scheduled to be held in June/July next year (2023) - this would have been the first time in many editions that it would be held in the club off-season.

However, it has now been shifted to January/February 2024, which would see Afcon again being held in the middle of the season.

The reason for that is due to heavy rain forecast in Ivory Coast during June and July, which could see matches being affected.

For Liverpool, this schedule shifting is a negative as we will again miss out on a few key players in the middle of the season. Mohamed Salah and Naby Keita will certainly be called up to play and will miss games, as they did the last season.

This change will also affect any future African players the Reds sign within the next two transfer windows. However, the tournament will take place in the 2023/24 season, so there is some time to go for that.
