Qatar refuse to guarantee World Cup safety to LGBTQ+ fans
As per The Guardian, Qatari authorities have not responded to concerns over the safety and well-being of LGBTQ+ fans during the World Cup later this year.
When presented a list of questions over the safety of these fans in the conservative country, only the following reply was provided: "Everyone will be welcome to Qatar in 2022, regardless of their race, background, religion, gender, sexual orientation or nationality.
"We are a relatively conservative society – for example, public displays of affection are not a part of our culture. We believe in mutual respect and so whilst everyone is welcome, what we expect in return is for everyone to respect our culture and traditions."
The Guardian understands Qatari authorities are not providing a proper answer to whether or not their country will safeguard LGBTQ+ fans if the need arises.
As a result, some of these groups are even planning to potentially boycott the tournament.
