Man United Told To Take Captain's Armband From Harry Maguire
Speaking on talkSPORT radio, former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy said: "The captaincy shouldn't be set in stone. But it is a very important decision for Manchester United moving forward and not one to be taken lightly.
"I certainly don't think that Erik ten Hag should be leaving that [the captaincy] down to the players. What you could do is leave it as it is so you can give yourself a bit of time to make the right decision.
"My feeling is, sometimes for a new manager, to give the captaincy to a player he trusts who he brings in from the outside. If you bring in a leader and go 'you're the leader and captain as well' you're together then."
Harry Maguire's place in Man United's first team — let alone the captain's armband — could be in jeopardy next season following Ten Hag's arrival at Old Trafford.
The centre-back was made skipper by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer after signing for the Red Devils from Leicester City in 2019 but the decision has never sat well with the fans.
