Zimbabwe League Has Been Suspended After Fans Violence During Game
Top-flight football in Zimbabwe has been suspended until further notice following a wave of violence and fan trouble during a heated game on Sunday, May 15.
The match between Highlanders and Dynamos dubbed the biggest fixture in Zimbabwe, had to be abandoned following unfortunate scenes that transcended into full-blown violence.
Unsavoury scenes included fans attacking the referee, property within the Barbourfields Stadium in Bulawayo being vandalized and goalposts being destroyed.
It all sparked off when the Highlanders went 1-0 up in second-half injury time, with the game meandering towards an end.
Dynamos players and fans were angered by the goal as they felt the goalkeeper had been fouled in the build-up.
What ensued was a dangerous confrontation as fans infiltrated the stadium to attempt to get to match officials, who had to be whisked away by security.
BBC Sport Africa further reports that because of the chaotic scenes, Zimbabwe's Premier Soccer League (PSL) decided to suspend all matches until further notice.
The damning decision means there is practically no football in the country at the moment, both locally and internationally as the country is still under a FIFA ban.
