Diego Maradona's 'Hand of God' shirt sold for over £7m despite Argentina protest
Sotheby's Auction House have officially confirmed the sale of Diego Maradona's iconic 'Hand of God' shirt.
The jersey was sold for a whopping £7,142,500 ($9,284,536), reportedly marking the 'record for any item of sports memorabilia'.
It was put up for sale by former player Steve Hodge, who exchanged shirts with Maradona after the England vs Argentina 1986 World Cup clash.
Members from the Argentine FA and Maradona's family protested the deal, stating that Maradona's 'Hand of God' and 'Goal of the Century' shirt belongs to them.
A member of the delegation said: "He is selling something that belongs to Maradona and the AFA without authorisation. It should be in Argentina in order all Argentines can enjoy it — and not for a millionaire to display it in his closet."
