Bayern Munich could face strict punishment for fielding 12 players for a short period in their 4-1 win over Freiburg in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
The mistake happened towards the 85th minute when substitute Niklas Sule entered the pitch but the one he was supposed to replace – Corentin Tolisso – failed to make way.
Bayern played nearly 20 seconds with 12 players before the problem was spotted and the result could now be reversed, with Freiburg getting the win.
As per Bild, the Bavarians could not only have the 3 points deducted from their league total, but also face the possibility of points deduction.
Freiburg, however, will need to make a formal complaint to the DFB (Germany football association) if they want to escalate this matter and get the win.
Bayern’s manager Julian Nagelsmann defended the actions after the game stating that a problem with the electronic board meant that Tolisso couldn’t exit the field and played on even when Sule came on.
The Bavarians are currently 9 points ahead of second-place Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga, but that could come down if they’re punished for the bizarre mistake.
