Chelsea 'could still be sold' after sanctions if Roman Abramovich receives no money from sale

The sale of Chelsea FC can still go through if they are able to acquire a ‘special license’ from the UK government, as per INews.

On Thursday, the UK government laid heavy sanctions on Roman Abramovich and put the club’s sale on hold.

However, it has been since clarified that the sale could take place – but only if Abramovich receives no money from it.

The UK government will be keeping a close eye on the club’s accounts if such a thing was to take place.

They said in a statement: “While the current licence does not permit the sale of the club, the government is open to a sale and would consider an application for a new licence to allow for [it].

“Proceeds could not go to the sanctioned individual [Abramovich] while he is subject to sanctions.”

Chelsea have been hit by a number of sanctions, as nobody apart from season ticket holders can attend home games.

The club can’t sell official merchandise anymore and only have a £20,000 cap for travel – meaning they might not be able to fly to France for their Champions League game against Lille next week.
