with our system, even Mbappe will suffer': Fan details how Blues can tactically improve
Chelsea have won their last two Premier League games but the title seems far away with leaders Manchester City 13 points ahead.
The Blues have suffered from a dip in form since December. This is due to various reasons - injuries, packed schedule and more. However, the biggest criticism has been of our attack as it is far from what it can be.
Chelsea fan and Tribuna user Rolly Plug broke down the team's issues and how they can be improved upon.
No more excuses for Tuchel
"Tuchel, though a good coach, has to improve tactically. For several months now, we’ve been playing abysmally; note that even the CWC game was suboptimal
"He should stop all those excuses: from covid 19, to players are tired because they played lots of games and now, they travelled from a region with different weather. The players we had (when some were injured or had covid) were good enough to beat some of the teams we dropped points against at that time: Burnley, Everton, wolves etc.
"Even when he was claiming that they were tired, there were several first team players that were not even playing then at all e.g. Harvetz, Ziyech etc.
Where and what improvement is needed
"He needs to improve on: limiting rate of back/side passes, how not to be over-reliant on creativity from the wingbacks, but also play through the middle; vertical passes, through balls, long-range shots, long direct balls....these can help bring the best in the forward players.
"Werner, Lukaku, Ziyech, Pulisic could fire on all cylinders but they are currently being starved of the ball if they get the right supplies from midfield. Imagine a Fabregas in this team!
"With the current system, even if we buy Mbappe, Halaand & Lewandowski, we’ll still make them redundant, then they’ll begin to lose self-confidence. Forget Lukaku!
"Definitely, we’ll need to buy better Midfielders in the summer (but they are searching for solutions in the wrong place I.e. prioritising defenders and strikers). However, until then, I believe he can still optimize with the lads that are available....just a change or addition to the training pattern is needed."
That is quite a detailed explanation of our issues and it's a good one too. Chelsea have scored 49 goals this league season, which is far behind Liverpool and Manchester City - this is despite spending over £340m on forwards since the summer of 2020.
While the players are surely underperforming, Tuchel must organise his system to suit their needs a little more. If he can succeed in doing so, then there is little doubt that the team will become much better.
