Why is Spanish Super Cup being played in Saudi Arabia and not in Spain

Barcelona will play the Spanish Super Cup in Saudi Arabia on Wednesday, 12 January 2022.

The final is being played in Saudi Arabia because in June 2021, the Spanish FA signed a deal with the Middle East country to have them host the tournament until 2029.

La Liga president Javier Tebas was not happy with this decision, but there was little he could do to stop a deal worth $120m.

Barca earned a shot at the trophy after winning the Copa del Rey in 2021.

La Liga winners Atletico Madrid, runner-up Real Madrid and Spanish Cup runner-up Athletic Bilbao will contest for the trophy.

Barca will play their semi-final against Real Madrid.
