Bam Adebayo Set To Undergo Surgery On Thumb Injury In USA
Miami Heat of America basketball star, Bam Adebayo is heading to hospital for surgery on a thumb injury he copped in recent action with his club, megasportsarena.com reports.
The Miami-based team is USA’s National Basketball Association (NBA) will now be poised to be without the Nigerian-born star for a while, as reports out of God’s Own Country indicate that Adebayo is expected to miss around six weeks, which would equate to around 20 to 25 games.
This is an additional blow for The Heat, who are already dealing with the absence of Markeiff Morris and their fans would be shocked to learn that Adebayo needs surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb and is likely out until at least mid-January.
It is the first major injury of Adebayo’s five seasons as a professional basketball player, pressing pause on a year that is currently seeing him average a career-best 18.7 points for Miami – along with 10.2 rebounds per game.
The gold medalist at this year’s Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan was injured in Monday’s loss to Denver before tests on Tuesday and Wednesday determined that he had torn the ulnar collateral ligament.
He shrugged off the injury after the game, insisting it was nothing, adding: “I’m all right,” but experts say a timeframe would have Adebayo missing somewhere between 20 and 25 games.
The Heat, though, insist a timetable for his return is not expected to be finalised until after surgery, which has been scheduled for Sunday, though the initial prognosis calls for him to miss around six weeks.
It is also a personal setback for Adebayo, who was one of three players who started all six games at the Tokyo Olympics and helped Team USA win gold.
The Nigerian-born ace led the American team in rebounds, averaging 5.7 per game, plus averaged 6.3 points on 57 per cent shooting at the Games. December 04, 2021 at 06:55AM
