Former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey returned to haunt his old club as he stunned the home supporters by putting Newcastle ahead after just 7 minutes as they hit the ‘Reds’ on the counter attack.

He unleashed a strike from the edge of the area, following a poor clearance by Thiago Alcântara, to send the visiting faithful into delirium in the Anfield Road end.

Conceding the goal fired up the ‘Reds’ who pushed for an immediate equaliser and got themselves back into the game as Diogo Jota fired in with his left foot from close range in the 21st minute, after his initial header was saved by Martin Dúbravka.

Minutes later, following some calamitous play by the away side, Mohamed Salah made it 2-1, and at the same time, equalled Jamie Vardy’s record of scoring or creating a goal in fifteen consecutive PL games.

It was much more of the same for the home side after HT, controlling the possession and making Newcastle work to get the ball from them.

Jacob Murphy had a big chance for the ‘Magpies’ in the 57th minute, but he fired the ball wide of the left post.

The visiting side admirably put up a better fight in the second half, but lacked the quality that the home team had in abundance.

The ‘Reds’ finished the game off late in the contest when Trent Alexander-Arnold hammered a strike home from 25-yards out in front of The Kop.

The victory sees Jürgen Klopp’s men move just one point behind Manchester City, and they have now won four consecutive PL home games on the bounce.

Eddie Howe, however, will hope he can change Newcastle’s fortunes soon, as they haven’t won away from home since May.
