Reggae Boyz Stunt Us Momentum
Gregg Berhalter’s men were unable to collect maximum points away from home against Jamaica as the two sides played out a 1-1 draw at Independence Park.
After a frantic first ten minutes, the United States showed their superiority in quality to take the lead.
The ‘Stars and Stripes’’ most in-form player, Timothy Weah, went on a fantastic solo run in the Jamaica penalty box before chipping the ball over goalkeeper Andre Blake’s shoulder and in via the post.
US celebrations did not last long however as, ten minutes later, Michail Antonio fired a stunning, long-range effort beyond Zack Steffen’s grasp and into the top corner to level things up.
Perhaps due to a quickly-deteriorating playing surface, neither side was able to put together any more quality moves before they headed into the dressing rooms for HT.
The second period started in similar fashion to the first, with neither side able to string together enough passes to threaten the opposition goal, something which has been a pattern throughout CONCACAF World Cup qualifying of late.
However, while neither side were at their attacking best, both had chances to take the lead as the game progressed.
United States midfielder Gianluca Busio saw his curling effort fly just over the bar, while the Jamaicans should have gone ahead midway through the half when Bobby Decordova-Reid sent the ball over the crossbar from point-blank range.
The ‘Reggae Boyz’ had a late goal ruled out for a foul in the penalty box, which was symptomatic of a match often lacking in cutting edge.
The visitors will feel disappointed to not build on beating arch-rivals Mexico just a few nights prior, but they remain top of the table in CONCACAF qualifying.
For Theodore Whitmore’s men, however, a home draw against an in-form United States side will be seen as a sign of progress as they remain in the hunt for a spot in Qatar next year.
