Since taking over from Marco Giampaolo in October 2019, Pioli has amassed an average of 1.97 points per Serie A game.
They are currently joint Serie A leaders with Napoli and back in the Champions League for the first time in seven years, all with a far smaller transfer budget than many of their rivals.
The 56-year-old is currently only under contract until June 2022 and earns just €2m per season net, the same salary as Sinisa Mihajlovic at Bologna and Torino’s Ivan Juric.
Director Paolo Maldini and the coach himself have confirmed negotiations are going well for a new contract.
According to Calciomercato.it, the only sticking point remains getting the all-clear from Elliott Management for the increase in wages.
Pioli will still be a very long way off the top-earning coaches in Serie A, who are Max Allegri at Juventus and Roma’s Jose Mourinho, both picking up €7m per season net.
