RB Leipzig 4 - 1 Greuther Furth: Poulsen powers comeback win over Fürth

Yussuf Poulsen came off the bench to make two vital goal contributions, as RB Leipzig recovered from a HT deficit to defeat Fürth, and extend their undefeated streak to five Bundesliga matches.

Greuther Fürth got off to an impressive start in this contest, and their improvement compared to recent matches was noticeable, as they began the game playing with a decent degree of intensity and took advantage of RB Leipzig’s struggles.

This was particularly the case in defence, but they generated the best chances inside the first 20 minutes, and were particularly efficient in winning aerial duels, though neither Jeremy Dudziak nor Branimir Hrgota could score through headers.

Fürth thought they had found the back of the net in the 23rd minute, but the effort was ruled out due to a previous foul. With the likes of André Silva and Christopher Nkunku far too isolated in the final third for Leipzig, it seemed as though the first half was going to end goalless. Nordi Mukiele had different ideas, bringing down Christian Dingert inside the box, and Hrgota buried the ball into the back of the net to put the visitors 1-0 up just before HT.

Leipzig’s manager Jesse Marsch sent Yussuf Poulsen onto the pitch ahead of the second half, and the Denmark international had an immediate impact on the contest, taking just 53 post-restart seconds to even things up on the score, before winning a penalty that Emil Forsberg converted in the 53rd minute to completely turn the tables.

The visitors could not react following the quick two goals, and Leipzig took advantage to bolster their lead even further, as another substitute in the form of Dominik Szoboszlai bagged a goal of his own to make it 3-1 midway through the second half.

The Hungary international also set up a fourth goal, with a perfect cross that was met by Hugo Novoa from close range. The 18-year-old netted his first-ever Bundesliga goal in what was his top-flight debut to complete a truly astounding second half for Leipzig.

Overall, Leipzig delivered an authentic ‘Jekyll and Hyde’ performance to come away with full points against the league’s biggest relegation candidates. As for Fürth, they have now lost seven Bundesliga games in a row – and based on how they have looked thus far, it might already take a miracle for them to avoid the drop.
