'I'm ready to adapt,' says Chelsea midfielder on Tuchel's demands that he play in numerous roles.
Cesar Azpilicueta, Chelsea captain, stated he doesn't mind switching duties under Thomas Tuchel as long as it benefits the team.
Not only that, but he's also highly versatile, making him an extremely valuable component of the team.
In 2012, he joined Stamford Bridge as a young right full-back from Marseille.
Under Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte, and now Tuchel, he has played various roles.
Interestingly, Azpilicueta usually played on the left flank during Mourinho's second term at Chelsea.
Playing as a left-back was never easy for a right-footed player because it drastically limited his abilities.
Conte then switched to a 3-4-3 shape, and Azpilicueta seemed at ease on the right side of the back three. Tuchel chose Azpilicueta as his first pick for the post when he arrived in January and began employing a similar configuration.
Tuchel has also played Azpilicuta as a right wing-back, a position that the experienced defender is uncomfortable with.
Chelsea captain John Terry has spoken out about his many duties under Tuchel.
"I've always maintained I'm willing to adapt whenever the manager deems I can be more beneficial to the squad in another role," the Spain international told the club's official matchday programme (via 5th Stand app).
"I've played a lot of right center-back, but I've also played a lot of wing-back," he says.
"So whenever I move positions, I try to acquire information from the manager about what he needs from me and then pass that along to the squad."
