Granada CF 1 - 1 Getafe: Rock-bottom Azulones denied first W at the death

The search goes on for Getafe’s first La Liga (LL) victory of the season as fellow relegation-threatened side Granada snatched a dramatic 98th-minute equaliser through Jorge Molina, to extend the hosts' remarkable record of scoring in every LL home game so far this season.

A 1-0 victory in Granada’s last home game clearly buoyed the hosts, who started the game on the front foot and wasted an excellent chance to open the scoring. Sergio Escudero’s marauding run down the left ended with the full-back cutting the ball back perfectly into the path of Ángel Montoro, but the Spaniard couldn’t keep his effort down and it drifted harmlessly over.

Granada’s pressure was relentless, but against the run of play, Getafe snatched a surprise lead - netting only their fourth goal of the season in the process. Damián Suárez’s lofted free-kick was helped on by Erick Cabaco to Enes Ünal who bundled the ball over the line in unorthodox fashion.

Victory was far from a foregone conclusion for the visitors though, with Granada boasting a four-match unbeaten run against Getafe, so if the ‘Azulones’ were going to claim only their second victory on Granadan soil in the last decade, there was still a lot of work to do after the break.

Getafe were rooted to the bottom of LL prior to tonight's clash, but the ‘Nazaríes’ weren’t faring much better themselves, also starting the night in the relegation zone, and the lowly league positions of these sides was evident to see with the distinct lack of quality in the final third throughout the game.

Sometimes when you’re down at the bottom, your luck isn’t in and when Mauro Arambarri was adjudged to have handled in the area, Getafe must’ve thought just that, but they were let off the hook by potentially the worst penalty you’re ever likely to see from Luis Suárez, who found the upper-tier behind David Soria’s goal. Getafe had only mustered one goal away from home and you got the sense it may not be enough, and so it proved as Molina came back to haunt his former employers with a last-gasp equaliser from Luis Milla’s corner to deny the visitors a maiden victory this season.
