A lot of European nations consider quitting FIFA to fight World Cup reform
FIFA is pushing for a dramatic change of the football calendar which would include holding the World Cup every two years.
The plans are popular with some FAs from Africa and Asia but in Europe, the idea has found little sympathy so far.
In fact, the resistance there is so strong that more than a dozen nations even consider quitting FIFA if the changes are in effect, the Associated Press reports.
That group is more likely than not to include some of the Nordic federations who signed a joint letter to FIFA slamming the plans.
“If a majority in FIFA decides to adopt a proposal on (biennial) FIFA World Cups, the Nordic football associations will need to consider further actions and scenarios that are closer to our fundamental values than what the current FIFA proposal stands for,” said the statement from Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Iceland and the Faroe Islands.
As per the source, those federations might have support from UEFA president Aleksander Cefering who also opposes the reforms. So, their withdrawal from FIFA would have no impact on their involvement in European competitions at the club or international level.
