Manchester United Cancel January Transfer

Manchester United crashed out of the competition on Tuesday night with a 3-2 defeat to Julian Nagelsmann’s men in Germany, meaning they will play Europa League football in 2021.

While spending is not solely the answer for United, further investment in January could help the club close the gap at the top of the Premier League.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are currently two points adrift of the top-four but do have a game in hand on fourth-placed Leicester.

The United boss was left frustrated with the club’s summer transfer business when the window closed in October and one of the names the board failed to land at his request was Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano.

The Frenchman was suspended for Tuesday’s game and he remains a long-term target for Solskjaer, who is still keen on adding a centre-back to his squad.

However, according to The Athletic, a January move is now unlikely following Leipzig’s qualification for the last 16.

Should the club have been eliminated from the Champions League, they would have been far more inclined to sell mid-season at the turn of the year.

Upamecano’s new £36million release clause comes into play next summer and Leipzig are determined to hold out until then.
