Lewandowski breaks Bundesliga scoring record with a brace against Freiburg

Bayern Munich striker, Robert Lewandowski, has now emerged as the most no-german player with most goals in a Bundesliga season, breaking Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s record.

The Polish striker broke the record with a brace against Freiburg Saturday, few days after Bayern became Bundesliga champions for the 8th time in a row. Bayern won the tie 3-1.

This is also Lewandowski’s 33rd goal in just 30 Bundesliga matches this campaign,  which came in the first half at the Allianz Arena as Bayern secured a 3-1 advantage at the break. The second half of the encounter witnessed no goal.

Aubameyang, who now plies his trade with Arsenal had scored 31 in the 2016/17 season while he was with Borussia Dortmund before moving to North London.

Lewandowski might not be able to hit the 40 goal tally, a remarkable record set by the legendary Bayern Munich and German striker Gerd Mueller in the 1971-72 season, with just one round of matches remaining.

Having scored 48 goals in 41 games in all competitions this season, Lewandowski can still increase his overall tally, with Bayern set to face Bayer Leverkusen in the German Cup final on July 4 and continued with the Champions League which resumes in August.

He is also the top scorer in the European clubs’ elite competition this season with 11 goals in six games. He was part of the goal scorers in the 3-0 victory against Chelsea in the first leg of the last 16 clashes at Stamford Bridge back in February.
